I’ve mentioned before how much I love movies and going to them, especially in summer. And I’ve definitely done that in the little free time I had the last few months. TC has become my recent movie buddy, her with Coke and popcorn and me with smuggled-in candy and water. We’re quite a pair.
Anyhow, now that summer movies are coming to a close and we are looking ahead to fall (cough, New Moon, cough), I thought I’d take a look back at some of the summer movies I saw and recent DVDs I’ve rented and give them report card grades.
I’m sure some won’t be a surprise :)
Movies:
- Julie & Julia: A+
- Time Traveler’s Wife: B/B-
- Extract: B-
- 500 Days of Summer: B
- The Hangover: A
- Bruno: B
- Transformers 2: B-/C+
Overall, I was happy with the movies I saw this summer. A few wowed and a few disappointed but overall, I left pretty happy (except for Time Traveler’s Wife which had me bawling like a baby)
Also, I know I’m missing some movies from here but these are the ones I could recall, which could be a sign too!
DVDs:
- Adventureland: A
- State of Play: A
- Duplicity: B+
- I Love You Man: A-
- He’s Just Not That Into You: B
My top picks from both lists are: Julie & Julia and State of Play. Both are very different movies but are the ones that really stood out to me. Loved them both and highly recommend them!
As to the movies I’m looking forward to seeing next: The Informant! with Matt Damon is definitely on the list and Love Happens with Aaron Eckhart. He is VERY dreamy.
So tell me, what are the best movies and DVDs you’ve seen lately?
Review blog update: In prep for fall, I’m reviewing JCrew’s Bootcut cords. They’re bold and possibly fabulous.
I finally went to see Julie & Julia yesterday and LOVED IT! I also saw (500) Days of Summer a few weeks ago … I’d give it a B as well. I thought it was good, but not as good as I was expecting based on a lot of reviews I read/heard.
I’m getting excited to move forward — Oscar season isn’t too far away!
I meant to see so many movies this summer and I only saw one!
I only saw a couple of movies this summer, but I did make it to the drive in!!!
I would give 500 Days of Summer an A, I lovedddd it!! I still need to see The Hangover and I Love You, Man..
I have yet to check out Julie and Julia. I want to see it so bad.
the hangover was definitely my favorite movie of the summer, it was hilarious. and after reading julie and julia i really want to see the movie, ah, need to see it soon!
I LOVEEDDD I Love You Man, totes magotes…lol : )
I MUST recommend Inglourious Basterds. One of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time.
I haven’t seen any of these yet (apart from He’s Just Not That Into You), and the only film I’ve seen at the cinema recently is “The Ugly Truth”. Which was pretty good.
away we go was the best summer movie i saw. loved it!
I watched Duplicity last weekend and really liked it; I have State of Play to watch next so I’m curious to see it!
Right there with you on Julie & Julia. Excellent movie.
I’ll add Funny People to the list: B. It was good but also surprisingly sad at the same time.
NEW MOON! Can’t wait!
No Wolverine? That just hurts.
I say A+ for Hangover. Time Traveller’s Wife was only eh for me. Also, I really want to see The Informant. Passing on Love Happens though.
Only a B/B- for Time Traveller’s Wife? I was thinking of going to see that. I miss watching movies. I should start watching more!
I always wanted to see State of Play. I gotta see it now since you gave A!!
JT and I liked “I love you, Man” too — some parts were really really funny.
BTW, wow, you did see many movies this summer. Great!
I agree with everything you said EXCEPT for Adventureland. The scene in which Ryan Reynolds picks up Kirsten on the couch creeped me out so badly it ruined the whole movie.
I didn’t get to watch Bruno when it’s played on theaters so a bunch of us watched it the other day in dvd. Even as a trashy movie regular, I was shocked to my skull watching that. Ahmahzing! LOL.
Inglorious Basterds was incredible. One of Tarantino’s best. I also saw Moon a couple weeks ago with Sam Rockwell and LOVED it!
we havn’t seen alot of movies this summer but those we have seen we’ve been really happy with: Transformers, Ice Age 3, Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince and i think there is one that is slipping my mind! I do know that tomorrow we are going to see “9″ (not district 9, atleast not yet) before picking up BioMom from the bus station.
I actually just saw adventureland and he’s just not that into you and HATED them. I totally agree about the hangover though :-)
Ahh, so many movies I haven’t seen! I just saw the preview for Love Happens. Aaron Eckhart is dreamy!
It’s so bad, I’ve seen none of those movies! I’m so far behind! :) I’ll have to check out the ones you gave a good grade to!
