So I guess it’s fall

By: Jessica B.

The last two days in Chicago have proven to me that it’s officially fall. Yeah, I tried to hide from it and still wear my cute summer clothes, but I do hate being cold and soon enough a summer dress may just look silly.

So it’s fall now. Thanks weather, I got the memo.

It’s still going to take time to really let this sink in, but I want to be positive and list the things I am looking forward to with this change of season:

  • Leaves changing colors – I don’t see this a lot in the city, but whenever I go home, I go for a drive to enjoy them
  • Scarves – I love them and wear them all the time when it cools down. Time to get them out!!
  • Honey Crisp apples – These are like dessert in apple form. I always look forward to when they are in season
  • Perfect sleeping weather – Cool weather + blankets = perfect night’s sleep
  • Cotton jackets – Warmth without being too hot, perfect transition to the down jacket
  • Smell of fall – It just smells crisp and cool, that’s the only way I can describe it
  • Heated mattress pads/blankets – I love cuddling up in these with my slippers on and flannel jammies. So comfy!
  • Working on my “winter coat” – I mean indulging in the treats and warm drinks/foods of the season. All in good balance with going to the gym :)
  • College football!! – Yeah I love it. I plan to be watching the Minnesota/Wisconsin game on Saturday morning too!
  • Farmer’s markets – so much goodness in one place

Yikes, this is very close to last year’s list too!

Anyhow, one of my favorite things about college football is home games in Madison. Unfortunately, I don’t go to many of them (given the lack of car thing) but the best part of the home games is at the beginning of the fourth quarter when the student section erupts in the well known “jump around,” to the House of Pain 90s hit. On a bad day, I listen to this song on my iPod and do a little “jump around” myself.

The video isn’t great but you can hear the crowd sing along and people standing start moving up and down almost in unison. It’s pretty awesome.

And speaking of farmer’s markets, I went to one near the capital in Madison this weekend and took some awesome photos. Sadly, I didn’t buy all of these items, but the food porn going on is more than enough for me :)

Peppers, caliente!

Kettle corn!

I was good and bought apples, but I did that moreso because I wanted one of these guys:

Red velvet whoopie pie

I love red velvet and cake and I think I just found the perfect combo! Oh and it does taste like heaven, although it took me forever to finish this one. Damn it’s filling.

What are you looking forward to this fall? Is it finally fall-like weather near you?

Review blog update: Yes, I’ve been behind on this, but now that it’s getting cooler, here’s my favorite nighttime moisturizer

  1. am already preparing to get my winter clothes because winter is coming fast again. i could already feel the winter breeze-~,

  2. Mia Johnson says:

when buying winter clothes, i always chose wool because i love the feel of it”;:

  3. MinD says:

Today – days after you posted this, of course – finally feels like autumn. Living in the south, it takes a bit to start noticing fall rolling in. Hell, the high today is actually supposed to be 75 (I think they lied), but you can feel the chill and the leaves are slightly starting to change. Fall definitely arrived, but it’ll slowly move in and get settled.

  4. E.P. says:

It doesn’t feel like fall here yet, and it makes me really sad that most everyone else is experiencing it. The fall is my FAVORITE time of year for the same reasons. And I love being able to be outside without breaking a sweat immediately. And college football. Le sigh…

  5. AuburnKat says:

It’s definitely fall here…although not the good kind! The weather has just been AWFUL!!

  6. the leaves are starting to change in nj and it has been nice. but i’m not enjoying the colder weather but i am looking forward to wearing sweaters! now that it is october i’m allowed t break them out :)

i’m also excited for jackets and scarves and my hot water bottle at night!

  7. jenn says:

i love your list – and madison football games are the BEST. jump around is awesome, and so are all of the other dances and cheers the student section does throughout the game. especially the ever-classy “f*ck you, eat $hit” cheer that they love so much. :)

are you going to any games this fall? we’ll be there for both homecoming and halloween – let me know if you’ll be there!!

  8. Allie says:

I was sitting in the student section in support of the opposing team (Michigan State). I have to say – the “Jump Around” part was pretty awesome looking from where I sat.

  9. Lil' Woman says:

It’s just hitting the 60’s here in Florida, and to us that’s some fall weather..lol

  10. katelin says:

one. i love scarves too, and i wear them as often as i can, even in california, haha.

two. ohmygosh can i have that red velvet pie thingy!?! it looks divine!! ah!

  11. Ashley says:

That red velvet whoopie pie is making me drool!

  12. Paola says:

While we’re quite lingering in an indefinite transition between summer and fall here these days – your list makes me wish for the weather to really move on to the next season, for all the reasons mentioned!

  13. Wonderful says:

I love Honey Crisp apples–I just had one at lunch!

  14. Kate says:

Mmmm … kettle corn! I’m all about taking long walks on days like today (it’s so pretty outside!), making tasty soups, visiting pumpkin farms, and eating apple cider doughnuts and toasted pumpkin seeds.

  15. Daisy says:

Love the idea of the winter coat!! It’s definitely autumn here now – sunny skies but cold in the air. Time to head to cosy cafés for liquid chocolate!

  16. The weather here in Charlotte is starting to become more “fall-like” with temps in the low 70s (that counts as fall-like here!) so I’m excited to pull out my scarves and, eventually, my tights.

but right now, I’m living in cardigans…cannot get enough of them.

  17. blaez says:

i love fall but i can’t even seem to transition right myself: i’m either too warm or too cool… eh, eventuallY!

  18. Melissa says:

Haha, I love the “winter coat” idea!
As for fall, I’m really anxious to whip my scarves out, too. I love them so it’ll be nice to finally put them to use.. and mask that cold Chicago air (even if it does smell nice and crisp) :)

  19. Nora says:

    that video is AWESOME!

My college plays “Eye of the Tiger” and “Welcome to the Jungle,” at each game which is pretty fun but it’s no Jump Around!

  20. Maxie says:

The farmers market pics are lovely. i wish i was near one!

  21. Kathleen says:

Ha, I love the “winter coat” idea!

  22. SoMi's Nilsa says:

When you said, “work on my winter coat,” I honestly thought you meant you could stop shaving for the season. Made me giggle.

  23. L.C.T. says:

They’re pretty much all the things I love about Autumn too.

  24. Heidi Renée says:

Oh my gosh I love that jumping thing. I love the Big Ten.

  25. Andhari says:

Fall is my favorite season, despite how fall here is usually low 70 degrees. Lol I love fall clothing, and the rain, and the yummy warm dessert..like warm bread pudding? Aw drool.

  26. Ray says:

I am so glad fall is here so that I have some more wardrobe choices! I always do up my apartment with Martha-ish fall decor as well…complete with yummy fall smelly candles.

  27. Maki says:

Aww fall is one of my favorite seasons!! The thing about living in Hawaii or Florida is that we don’t get to enjoy the beauty of four seasons. It’s just different living in up North – I enjoyed every minute of fall with delight when I lived in NJ, even it’s only for 9 months…

I think a lot of my childhood memories in Japan when I think of fall.. BTW, the pictures of peppers and eggplants – the color is insane! So pretty:)

  28. mandy says:

I really need to pull out my winter clothes. Its downright cold here tonight. I love snuggling under my down comforter and fur blanket. I am fully embracing fall now–the leaves changing, the crisp air, the pumpkin picking.

  29. Jenn says:

I want pumpkin seeds! I think I’m going to make this my most stereotypical fall yet, and go on hayrides with my housemates, a corn maze, apple picking, pumpkin carving… Sounds delightful.
