Happy Sunday!
I wish I could regal you all with stories of an exciting, thrilling, action-packed weekend but really, I laid around and did a whole lotta nothing. And it was awesome. But it wasn’t totally boring.
Sweetest Day: Pile of crap?
To start, Saturday I woke up and heard that it was a national holiday…Sweetest Day!!!
*crickets chirping*
Sweetest Day is like a rash. You wake up one morning and notice is something different, then suddenly it starts spreading and realize you’re out of cortisone cream and can’t do anything but ignore it until it goes away. Yeah, I’m reaching a little bit but I think you get my point.
For as long as I can remember, Sweetest Day is for couples, almost like a mini-Valentine’s Day. But according to Wikipedia and the official Sweetest Day Web site, it’s a day to celebrate all the loved and special ones in your life.
I really like that explanation more, too bad it’s only really associated with couples, full of cards, flowers and candy. Kill me.
But is it really just another Hallmark holiday? I think so.
Wikipedia says the “holiday” is celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes area (which is where I grew up and grew to hate this holiday) but I think Neil Kramer said it best on Twitter Saturday:
“Happy Sweetest Day to everyone who lives in upper Midwest where it must have been invented to ease your way into freezing winter.”
Oh Neil. There is so much truth to that statement.
Therapy time at the salon
So as a single girl, how did I celebrate this “holiday?” It started with a trip to my bi-monthly therapy session at the salon for a haircut and color. My hair grows very quickly so I have to get it cut every other month and I always look forward to it for one reason: scalp massage.
A good scalp massage is better than a good workout and a mani/pedi because it kneads out all the stress and you feel completely different (and relaxed) when it’s done. Couple that with a complimentary glass of wine and paying for those services is so much easier :)
I love going to get my hair done because I can talk my stylist about anything and just have a sympathetic ear to whatever is bothering me friend-, work- or family-wise. Actually, it might be better than retail therapy (almost).
And once I had a sexy, cleaned up cut and color, I took that sassy bob downtown to go shopping…but came home empty-handed.
Seriously! That’s always my luck, whenever I want to go shopping, I can’t find anything. Oh well, another time. Next weekend is full operation gym shoes, shoe booty and fall sweater. No mercy!
How was everyone else’s weekend? Do you look forward to going to the salon? Or do you celebrate Sweetest Day? I’m always curious to hear who knows about it.
Also, thanks everyone, both pro- and anti-pumpkin, for weighing in on Thursday’s post. I’m glad to hear there are other non-pumpkin fan supporters out there and for those who do enjoy it, we will agree to disagree on friendly terms :)
Review blog update: Yes, I’ve been slacking on this one but I’m back with part two of the MAC Volcanic Ash experiment, this time, the Thermal Mask!
I also got my hair done on Saturday, but i don’t really like the place I go. my boyfriend’s mom is a hair stylist, so she does it for free, but i HATE the way she does it! Unfortunately, I live with her, so i can’t just come home with a new haircut. I can’t wait to move out mostly for this reason :)
side note: we didn’t celebrate sweetest day. it’s pretty pointless.
There’s a “Sweetest Day”? Never heard of this in my life… My boyfriend bought me a milkshake that day. I wonder if it counts?
I didn’t even know sweetest day existed…
I’ve heard of Sweetest Day…but only because I see cards for it at the store. I grew up 2.5 hours south of Chicago and it certainly wasn’t anything there.
I just made my first hair appointment in a year! I’m excited. I love my stylist even though I’m irritated that he changed salons and is now even further away from me.
Also, I, too, hate when I want to go shopping but can’t find anything that’s right. So frustrating!
I was getting confused between “The Sweetest Day” name and the “National Dessert Day” or whatever it was.
Either way, I had an unplanned cupcake for breakfast so I was right on track haha.
It is definitely a great lakes/upper midwest thing. I lived in Kansas and never heard of it. I also lived in Northern Virginia and D.C. and never heard of it until I moved to Detroit.
This year, I honestly forgot it existed. Which is probably how it should be :-)
I think sweetest day is stupid as well. I get tired of all these made up holidays. I want flowers randomly, not because of some holiday when every one else gets flowers. My stylist is my BFF and I LOVE the feeling of freshly cut and colored hair. Which reminds me, my roots are really showing.
sweetest day is totally a midwest thing, i had never heard of it til i went to school in ohio and even then i never celebrated it, haha. a salon day sounds way better to me anyways.
I didn’t even know it was Sweetest Day until the day of. I celebrated it by eating bbq, seeing Where the Wild Things are and having a major meltdown. Sweetest Day can mess you up, even if you have a significant other.

Sweetest Day never hit my radar until last year. When our rabbi promptly reminded us our wedding would be on Sweetest Day. Ugh. Awful. What a STUPID holiday. You shouldn’t need a holiday to tell those you love how much they mean to you. That goes for Valentine’s Day, too.
BTW, I also went to my salon this weekend. And followed it up with a successfully spontaneous shopping spree.
I’ve never heard of this Sweetest Day junk but it sounds like another excuse to buy cards from Hallmark.
Sounds like a great day to go to the salon, I’m dying to go (hopefully this week!) and get my shaggy mess reigned in!
i’m married and my husband and i had no idea it was even sweetest day. its definitely a bs holiday created by some ad wizards. :)
is it really a national holiday?!?! lame sauce.
I knew about sweetest day thanks to running into the card stacks at Halmart, but I didn’t celebrate it. I totally would have – if I could get the bf on board for that kind of thing, but no luck.
And your salon sounds amazing. Complimentary wine and scalp massage, I’d be going once a week just for that.
I was also in the dark about Sweetest Day. There really is a holiday for everything :)
I had never heard of ‘sweetest day’ until I saw it being talked about on twitter. I prefer to celebrate “holidays” like National Chocolate Cupcake Day :)
Wait? Sweetest Day is ACTUALLY a holiday? I thought it was just like ‘national donut day’ or something that wasn’t really acknowleged.
They mentioned it on the radio here in Aus, because they’d declared it Sourest Day here instead. I think people were eating sour candy and the like just as a joke.
As you already know, I enjoy Sweetest Day! It was always a great holiday when I was in college. Boys bought flowers for the girls in the dorms and once we moved out of the dorms, it was always a ‘boys buy’ night at the bars.
At least among my Ohio friends (the birthplace of Sweetest Day) the day was more of a ‘friend’ day than a couple day. No one went on dates or anything like that!
The school also hosted food drives and other fundraisers on Sweetest Day.
All in all, I’m a fan of Sweetest Day. And I think you should give it another chance. Maybe do something nice for someone on Sweetest Day? It would probably be a bit sweeter!
i didn’t know it was sweetest day or that it existed but apperantly the guys at his work were talking about it so he bought me flowers just because he figured i was awesome enough to get flowers :)
as for pumpkins: i’ll be posting some mutalated pumpkins later this evening… muhahahahaha
Yeah.. Sweetest Day is a total Hallmark Holiday. I don’t buy into it.
I do love going to the salon- but the absolute worst is when I’m tired, just want to relax, and my stylist wants to chat. I can never be rude & tell her I just want to be quiet!
I’ve never heard of that holiday before….maybe thats a good thing tho, cause Valentines Day gives me anxiety.
I have never heard of this “Sweetest Day” thing. But it doesn’t sound like something I would like.
