PMS cravings

I always know when I’m beginning PMS because one of the following things happen:

  • I want to sleep all day
  • I become a petite little ball of rage
  • I am attracted to candy and sweets like a moth to a flame

I can handle the exhaustion and anger but I really hate the PMS cravings. I already enjoy candy in moderation but when it’s PMS time, I want sweets and chocolate day and night. And once that craving is there, the hormones must be fed.

And when they are, cramps feel better, anger subsides and the hormones all go back into balance. That’s magic right there.

This craving for sweets is NOT good for my diet right now (you’ll find out why tomorrow) but the thought of chocolate when I feel bloated and fat thanks to my period, oh my god, it’s the easiest way to make everything right in the world.

Overdramatic? Possibly but ladies, I don’t think I’m too far off on that analogy.

However, when you are craving chocolate or your item of choice during this hormonally sensitive time and you don’t have it in your house. Well, then one of two things happen: suffer or get creative.

And creativity can lead to drastic measures.

For example, a “friend” was recently in this situation when she was baking (for work). To keep her baked goods soft, she couldn’t take a “sample” from the finished pan so she found something better….a packet of frosting. Feeling as if she was scraping the bottom of the oh-my-god-I-must-have-chocolate-right-now barrel, she opened the frosting packet and dove in with a spoon.

Wracked with guilt (but feeling satisfied), she texted a friend to confess her shame and received the following message back, “crack is shamful, frosting is frosting!”

Genius.

So what do you crave when PMS’ing? Anything? Does anyone actually crave healthy foods?

Thanks for the shout out! I still think there are worse vices than frosting ;)

  2. blaez says:

oh! lol i was craving icecream a few months ago but we didn’t have any and i was on medical leave so no money…but i was craving coffee. ok so we have a coffee chocolate icecream craving…with caramel.

just so happens: i took some coffee from that morning, blended with milk, caramel sauce and chocolate sauce, ice, cinamon and sugar… NOM! its a weekly treat now in the evenings on sunday :)

  3. blaez says:

oh i don’t crave healthy stuff!! lol chocolate, peanut butter… chocolate WITH peanut butter!!! and cherry coke!

Currently, due to hormone treatments, I have PMS every, single day. Every day. Nonstop. So, I eat craploads of chocolate and salt. It’s a miracle I don’t weigh 500 pounds.

  5. AshleyD says:

Mine is french fries. Today I had to leave work and make a trip to Sonic to satisfy the hormonal craving. Not healthy at all, but so delish!

You have no idea how much I feel for you right now. I feel soo bloated and crampy right now and all I can think about is the jar of chocolatey peanut butter at home that I want to eat with a handful of pretzels…and maybe with some brownies thrown in for good measure. It sucks too because I’ve lost a ton of weight recently and I am going to put it all back on! How do other girls handle this?!

  7. It’s kind of a running joke that I crave the most disgusting foods all at once. Like, I’ll want a burrito, fried chicken, french fries with ranch and a milkshake. But all at once. My cravings are TERRIBLE.

  8. Kate says:

I don’t crave food so much as I crave ibuprofen, my bed and swoony movies. The cravings have only gotten worse since going off birth control.

  9. Erin says:

Hmmm, I haven’t really noticed cravings. I think I just get hungrier than usual! As in, no matter what I eat I’m still hungry.

Also, I hate when I’m having a chocolate or ice cream craving and we don’t have any in the house. I’m too lazy to go to the store. My most “creative” invention? Peanuts covered in Hershey’s syrup.

  10. andhari says:

My cravings are varied from totally fattening ice cream like coldstone plus all its toppings, froyo with chocolate mochi, buttered popcorn, oreo biscuits, and many more.

Sometime I can handle it but the rest I usually lose :p

  11. Selma says:

Donuts, chips and granny smith apples is what I’m craving when I do crave. Odd combination I know. Sometimes I just eat sugar (yes!) or lick the frosting from the can. If available that is. ;) I’m mostly just pissed though and not in the mood to do anything but watch TV. PMSing sucks sometimes. ;) lol

  12. Jenn says:

Healthy foods – that’s funny. I crave salt and chocolate. Chocolate covered pretzels and french fries dipped in a chocolate shake top the list.

  13. Wonderful says:

I crave comfort foods and pretty much anything unhealthy–I justify it by saying once my period is over for the month I’ll eat healthy again.

  14. cfid says:

For anyone who craves both salty and sweet let me say this: chocolate-covered pretzels!

  15. Kyla Roma says:

Oh my goodness, for me PMS means carb loading like I’m training for a marathon. Seriously, it’s unhealthy.

  16. maureen says:

I crave chocolate and sweets too and fatigue forget about it–it is just trying to drag yourself through the day that makes you a champion.
I have found though that if I take a magnesium tablet that my craving for the chcocolate and the swwets has diminished somewhat (not completely though).

  17. SoMi's Nilsa says:

I’m not sure that I crave anything during PMS that I don’t normally crave. I’m a sucker for chocolate and salty foods. Gah, no wonder my rings don’t fit!

  18. Lil' Woman says:

I crave anything and everything that would make me fat…chocolate, candy, pasta, kool aid.

  19. Nahl says:

I crave my bed..and any thing and everything sweet! Yum.

  20. Samantha says:

I crave potatoes…and mac&cheese. Weird, I know. But sooooo good.

  21. phampants says:

My gf is pmsing. I have the bruises to prove it. Oww…

  22. i don’t crave anything per se i just can’t stop eating! like at all.

  23. mandy says:

I want sweet followed by salty. I’ve been desperate before and actually googled directions for a frosting that I could make with ingredients in my pantry to satisfy a craving.

  24. jenn says:

I’m the same as you! normally – I’m not one for sweets at all. A bag of chips? Sure. Fries? Good. Mozzarella sticks? Even better. But sweets? Never. Unless my period is on its way.

That’s why when I start craving things like candy or chocolate – I know my bitchy attitude is right around the corner! Like it’s own little alarm clock.

  25. Angela says:

Try the sweet flavored mini rice cakes! They are actually pretty sweet and taste good, but they’re rice cakes so they’re not as bad for you!!

  26. Patti says:

I’ve eaten frosting out of a can before but my real shame is eating semisweet chocolate chips straight out of the bag. We keep them for baking and stuff and before I know it, I’ve eaten so many of them. I don’t even really like them plain. I just have to have the chocolate.

  27. Akirah says:

No. I’ve been craving peanut M&M’s lately. And beets. Weird combo.

I usually turn on some Seventh Heaven and cry my craziness away.

  28. If someone craves healthy foods, they’re crazy. I want salt, then I want sweet, then I want salt again. Remember that time you introduced me to coconut m&ms and I ate three bags? That was hard.

  29. barbetti says:

Um, these were my pregnancy cravings! Haha.

Honestly, I have no idea when my cycle is coming and no distinct symptoms. Which is why I didn’t realize I was pregnant for so long!

  30. Nora says:

Well, I love chocolate just as much as the next girl but I particularly love my favorite Turkey Sandwich from Panera. Could I make my own that’s pretty much the same thing? I’m sure I could, but it’s more fun from Panera and the bread is that much better too.

Also, I may or may not have licked frosting from the can before. And it may or may not have been PMS time when the frosting was ingested.
