Weekend recap: Pre-holiday travel prep

By: Jessica B.

Happy Sunday everyone! In less than two weeks it’s Christmas. Yikes. In fact, this time next weekend, I’ll be celebrating Christmas with my dad’s side of the family (early) and will be back in Wisconsin through the holidays. A week at home? I’m already planning lots of me-only field trips :)

But before I go home, I have a ton of stuff to wrap up. It’s amazing how fast time goes before you leave to go home or on a trip. I’m used to going home for a weekend but when I’m gone for more than three days, suddenly it’s a HUGE production to get ready.

The pre-travel prep includes:

  • Hair cut/color
  • Laundry
  • Waxing
  • Packing

Oh and leg shaving. This weekend I got my hair cut/colored and eyebrows done and below is a picture of the new “do.” I tried to be adventurous and cut the bangs a little shorter than normal. Now I am in the difficult adjustment period. Oh well.

Here’s what else was going on this weekend.

Everyday Adventures’ tree

Last weekend I put up my Christmas tree, but due to a miscommunication with dad, the wrong ornaments were brought down to Chicago. So I figured that my Charlie Brown tree would be bare this year, but I de-Scrooged and put some up Friday night and it was a lot of fun. And a great trip down memory lane.

So at Modern Gal’s request, here’s a picture of the final product!

Zoo Lights!

This may be crazy, but I love the little touristy holiday things in the city. This includes the CTA holiday train, Michigan Avenue tree lighting and Zoo Lights. I just soak it up.

And one touristy piece I did for the first time this year was Zoo Lights which takes place every year at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Zoo Lights is pretty much just the Zoo just decorated with lights and holiday figures so it’s cheesy but a lot of fun. As you can see, it’s pretty magical :)

More pictures and a video are up on Flickr too.

Not shown in these pictures: me almost tripping over a stroller placed behind me while I was examining a display. The kids must have smelled fear and come after me!

Bloggy Giveaway Awesomeness

About a month ago, I won Mandy’s book giveaway. I never win bloggy giveaways so I was thrilled to see Random.org gave me a little love (finally).

Anyhow, Mandy said she would fulfill whatever book desire I had and after some thought, I went with a classic: Sense & Sensibility. I’ve never read it but love Ang Lee version of it so I figured, this is this is the perfect opportunity for me to finally crack the book.

BUT when the book arrived, Mandy gave me another surprise along with the book, one that made me actually scream out loud in joy.

It’s cougar time! RAWR!

Thank you Mandy!!!

What about everyone else? Is your tree decorated and holiday cards out the door? Or do you have a pre-holiday travel ritual to get started on?

I have to say that I LOVE your haircut!!! Love it! So cute! It’s also nice to see other redheads=)

  3. Awwww, I love your tree! And your hair! The bangs were a good decision. And I’m a sucker for any kind of Christmas light — case in point: I live about two hours away from a huge Nascar race track. My friends and I used to go see their “Racetrack in Lights” display (similar to Zoo Lights) every winter. How incredibly redneck is that?

  4. I need a haircut so bad its RIDICULOUS.

I love your hair! I love your hair! I love your hair!

Christmas cards are out and shopping is complete, but the tree still isn’t decorated. Clearly, I’m doing things a little backwards this year. ;)

  8. Chelsy says:

I spy at Goldy Gopher hanging on that tree!!! YAY!

Oh yeah, and the rest of it looks pretty awesome too ;)

Your hair looks great–wish I could rock the bangs but I’m too scared that I will hate them once they are cut in.

    And the tree!
We have Zoo lights here in StL; I went years ago and it was a lot of fun. They even got a little crazy and served hot chocolate with Bailey’s. How can you go wrong with that!?

    Enjoy the book(mark!) =)

I love your haircut. The length of the fringe seems to be a perfect balance with the length of the rest of your hair. Nice job.

  24. Erin says:

I like your bangs! Very cute.

Your tree is pretty cute, too :-) I bet each one of those ornaments has a memory associated with it, doesn’t it?

Our tree was put up tonight. I didn’t think we’d get it done, but it did. And my husband even helped without whining. A first, I do believe!

We went to Brookfield Zoo’s version of the zoo lights. It’s fun to wander around the zoo in the dark. It is a little magical.

I also saw New Moon for the first time this weekend. I admit, there was drool.

  25. Erin says:

    You hair looks fabulous!

We are so not in the holiday spirit here. The presents are purchased, and the cards are in the mail…but it stops there. No lights on the house, and no tree yet. I have a feeling the tree just isn’t going up this year. We are just not feeling it.
