Anti-Gingerbread

I know, I’m such a seasonal food hater. First it was pumpkin and now it’s time to hate on gingerbread.

Oh snap, that’s right Gingerbread man, run run run as fast as you can…away! I don’t want your gumdrop buttons or sweet frosting-outlined shirt.

I have never been a gingerbread fan, ever.

I love decorating gingerbread houses but I don’t like gingerbread cookies, lattes or anything. Again, there is something about the taste that just…doesn’t appeal to me.

Maybe it’s because  always associated the holidays with mint instead of gingerbread. Mint M&Ms, mint chocolate brownies, those taste more like the holiday season to me.

In high school, I decorated a gingerbread house and I remember being very focused on the making sure my house was detailed with pretzels and candy, but then, I just wanted to stare at it and show it off. Never eat it.

When I went to the German Christmas market two weeks ago, I fell in love with the adorable German gingerbread hearts but again…just decor to me.

The one that says “I like Chicago” cracks me up

The coincidental thing about this post is that I’m going to a party tonight hosted by Maris where there will be gingerbread cake. I have already notifed her of this post and said that while her cake is lovely and I’m sure tasty, it’s not for me. Nothing personal.

So what about all of you? Are you gingerbread fans? Or do you  just prefer to build the houses?

I hate gingerbread too. Don’t worry, I’m right there with ya.

Now peppermint? That’s a WHOLE other story. I love mint ANYTHING.

  5. Erin says:

I adore gingerbread cake. I make a gingerbread cake with yummy lemon icing that is to die for! I do not, however, like those nasty, hard, overcooked gingerbread cookies. Blech.

  6. I love love love gingerbread! Gimme yours :)

    Happy blogoversary!

Don’t you think it’s weird how christmas is associated with food items that aren’t popularly liked? (If that sentence makes sense? Haha!) I mean, how many people do you know who like brussel sprouts? And christmas cake? I hate christmas cake! Cherrys and dried apricots and brandy….what’s wrong with a bit of chocolate??? :-)

I will eat your share and everyone else’s!

I don’t like gingerbread either…I must be a seasonal food hater too! :)

  10. barbetti says:

    BAH BAH GINGERSNAPS. GAHHHHH. Gross.

Now, I would never turn down free alcohol, but if I am ever offered a “gingerbread shot” again, I will die. DISGUSTING.

  11. Wonderful says:

I build the houses but don’t eat it either. I hate gingersnaps as well.

  12. katelin says:

i like the smell of gingerbread better than the taste, but i do enjoy the taste of it as well, so delicious.

  13. Kate says:

BLECH to gingerbread! We are soooooooooo in agreement on this one.

  14. I’m not the biggest fan of gingerbread either. I just discovered the joy of candy cane joe-joes from trader joes and OHMYGOODNESS, they are amazing. They are my new favorite holiday treat.

  15. Cass says:

Yuck, me and gingerbread are not a match made in heaven. I think it has to do with the molasses, because the smell of that makes me want to throw up.

I’ll admit I have made the cookies a few times though for the holidays. But only because I care about people and their stupid feelings. ;-)

  16. Kyla Roma says:

I had an amazing gingerbread cake a little while ago that was *insane*. So light, so full of flavour- it was insane.

I’m not a fan of gingerbread cookies that have been baked within an inch of their lives but fluffy gingerbread cake? I’m trying to find the recipe right now.

  17. phampants says:

I pass on the gingerbread too. Just give me sugar cookies. Heck, just sugar and I’ll be happy.

  18. jenn says:

not a gingerbread fan either. plus, i make my gingerbread houses with graham crackers – i cheat! :)

and the heart that says “i like chicago” is epic. you definitely should have bought that!

  19. Allison says:

not a huge gingerbread fan. Got sick off a gingerbread latte from Starbucks one year.

    Not trying that again.

  20. SoMi's Nilsa says:

Let’s see … in my house, you will find ample supplies of peppermint bark … and not a sign of gingerbread anything. Yep, I think that pretty much sums up which side of the fence I fall.

  21. We almost always make a gingerbread house, but I never eat it. I don’t mind the taste of gingerbread (love gingersnaps), however, I don’t really like to eat food that’s been sitting out collecting dust for a week or more.

  22. Bing says:

I like gingerbread flavored items, but I’m not obsessed with them. I guess it just depends on what it is. I like lattes and ginger snaps, but I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a real gingerbread man…

And those hearts – you shouldn’t eat them, even if you do like gingerbread, because they are probably all dried out and hard. They’re more for decoration. :)

  23. I LOVE pumpkin everything, but loathe gingerbread. Maybe I just prefer sweet things? (Yeah, that probably has something to do with it). Gingerbread always tasted to me like it was burnt or something. Grossness.

  24. Arielle says:

I love gingerbread AND pumpkin. But I hold nothing against people who don’t. =)

  25. mandy says:

I am not a fan of gingerbread house gingerbread because I bake mine with a really dark molasses, so I just assumed I didn’t like gingerbread anything. Then I tried a gingerbread latte and discovered it wasnt bad. Then I would try a gingerbread baked good here or there and thought it was ok. A while ago I’m not sure it was Maris or RebeccaC who posted a recipe for gingerbread cupcakes. I made them and there were out of this world good.
