The preference between hot and cold

By: Jessica B.

I’m very fussy when it comes to household temperatures. Why? Because right now, I’m in a constant state of being cold in my parents house. They leave the “heat” on at 60 degrees during the day and 55 degrees at night.

It feels like Antarctica all the time.

I’m constantly cold with teeth chattering and trying to stay warm while wrapped in my big fuzzy robe and slippers. I don’t want to TMI on here, but having your nips constantly at full mast is super irritating. Those things could cut glass.

Basically, I hate being cold.

My Chicago apartment, where I don’t pay for heat, is a balmy, heavenly 75 degrees in the winter. I love it, especially when I come home to a warm apartment when it’s cold outside. I’m sure when the free heat days are over, I’ll be a 60-degree girl too but for now, welcome to tropical paradise!

Dad and I constantly argue about the thermostat temp. He tells me to put on (another) sweater or just dress warmer but once I get cold, I cannot warm up. Thank goodness for my heated mattress pad. I cannot live without it in winter and I never want to leave my nice warm bed.

So this time when I came home, I decided to plan ahead and bring cute, coordinated pj pants from Gap and Old Navy. If I’m going to struggle to stay warm, why not try to look cute doing it?

Yeah, it still doesn’t work and I’m still wrapped in the fetal position in my bathrobe trying to stay warm. Classy.

What about you? Do you prefer to be warm or cool in your home/apartment or when you sleep?

Bloggy birthday: Thank you everyone for the kind blog birthday wishes. My blog and I appreciate them :) I also owe a big thank you to Teena in Toronto for reminding me about the big day!

  1. Some time before, I really needed to buy a car for my organization but I didn’t have enough money and couldn’t buy anything. Thank God my dude suggested to get the home loans from reliable bank. So, I acted so and used to be happy with my college loan.

My mom’s house is the same way, and it drives me absolutely crazy because I can never get warm, either. Whenever there, you can find my sister and me carrying around comforters to keep warm in whatever room we venture. She was a little better about it this past time, but still. It gets cold in there!

  3. moonjava says:

I prefer warmer rather than colder (but not too warm). Lol…my roommate can survive at 50-55, she says she sweats a lot…

Uhhhmmmm…ok…but I need something warmer because I have the awful issue of having cold hands and feet all the time…I prefer something 65 up till 70 I think.

  4. Amy B says:

That’s funny- I live in quite the opposite. I lounge in my place (in this crazy Chicago winter) all day in sweats and a hoodie bc I try to keep the electric bill down. I go home and make sure to pack shorts and t-shirts because my parents feel the need to keep their house feeling almost tropical. To each their own…

  5. Nycole says:

I had to laugh reading this. I live in Chicago and happily leave my apartment on 75 when I’m home. Right now I’m visiting family in Ohio and my mother will NOT let it go above 65. I’m COLD!! I understand it’s expensive to heat an entire house but DANG it’s just COLD!

  6. Lil' Woman says:

It’s killer living with Big Man and FMIL…they like it hot because there from the Virgin Islands but I like it colder cause Im originally from up north! :)

  7. Erin says:

And I thought my parents’ house was cold at 68! Wow. My husband always jokes that my parents’ house is like a museum: it’s cold and you can’t touch anything. Our house? Thermostat is set at 70 when we’re home (64 when we’re not) and sometimes 75 in the mornings. And we have a heated mattress pad, too. Last year our gas bills were outrageous but this year we have insulation in our walls so we’re hoping that helps.

  8. A Super Girl says:

I lost free heat when I moved. The thermostat is now consistently at 60 degrees and I’m almost always curled up on the couch under a blanket. But until I get a handle on what the gas bill will be, I’m being very conservative!

  9. katelin says:

i always like to be cold when i sleep so i can use a ton of blankets to warm up, it’s quite heavenly. as for the rest of the time i’m like you, when i get cold i usually stay cold for a while, it’s a bit tricky.

  10. That’s me :)

I tend to keep our place on the cool side … gotta love menopause :) When I get chilly, I grab a blanket.

  11. Bing says:

Dude, 55-60 is way too cold for a winter in Wisconsin! How do you survive? I think my limbs would fall off and I’d freeze to death.

We keep our heat at 67 or 68 when we aren’t home or at night, and 70-72 when we are there. Our house is drafty and I can’t deal with the cold. But I do like to be cool when I sleep. Nothing is worse than waking up all sticky and sweaty.

  12. My campus apartment has radiators that are like that Katy Perry song (you’re hot then you’re cold…you’re up then you’re down). I hate when it’s so hot in there, because I didn’t buy that cozy down comforter for nothing! I’d much rather be bundled up and juuust right than feeling icky all night.

My house is usually really comfortable, except for our live-in basement (where the computer is, of course). The house is built into a hill, and it’s cold… but I love it.

  13. Wonderful says:

60 degrees is freezing to me! I complain when they put the temperature at 68 degrees. I definitely prefer to be warm.

  14. Kristin says:

OMG, my parents are the same way! Even my dad will get chilly and refuse to turn the heat up. Who does that?! I’ve offered to pay the heating bill difference to warm it up a bit while I’m home…

  15. Kate says:

Whoa! I thought Brian and I were hard core leaving our heat at 63, but your parents are no joke. I love to be warm (I kept my heat at 72 in the winter when I lived in my little apartment in the city), but I hate high gas bills. I thank my heating pad, big blue blanket and cozy North Face coat for protecting me from hypothermia. :)

  16. Megkathleen says:

I’m always cold too and my fiance is always hot which means we’re always fighting over the thermostat. I pretty much am always wrapped in a blanket and have taken to wearing winter hats in the house. He thinks I’m crazy, but truly he’s the loonie one.

  17. jenn says:

i feel your pain – my husband needs our house freezing all the time since he’s like a furnace, and i’m always freezing cold!! i wrap up in my snuggie under a blanket (no joke) and am even forced to wear socks to bed, which i HATE.

last night – when it was about 4 degrees out, he OPENED our bedroom window before bed to “let some air in”. i almost killed him!

  18. Lollygagger says:

This is so funny, but only because it’s so true! My apt is hot, and I love it. When I go to my p’s I’m always freezing and when anyone comes to my place they feel like it’s a sauna. But I love having it toasty in the winter. :) I always prefer hot to cold.

  19. Erin says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of being cold, but I detest being hot. At school we go from no heat to a sauna in about 5 seconds. It’s miserable, and there is nothing you can do about it. At least if you are cold, you can add more layers. Plus, as someone who has recently had the joy of experiencing hormonally-induced hot flashes and night sweats…I’m a big fan of being cold these days.

  20. We don’t have control of our thermostat- our downstairs neighbors do, so sometimes it gets cold. I have no problem breaking out the Josh’s old down comforter (from his bachelor days though so maybe, ew?) and snuggling down on the couch.

  21. Kyla Roma says:

Oh I hear you! We tend to keep out house around 70 all the time and with it being so small that means it’s just perfect! I always wear sweaters in the winter, I don’t have the heat up so much that I could wear a T-Shirt but being really properly cold?

    I’m not down for that!!

  22. I love business travel because I can crank up the temp in the hotel rooms :) I am always cold and would prefer 75 degree temps, but since we pay for our heat, we keep it at 66….which still feels freezing to me! I’m good friends with my space heater!

  23. SoMi's Nilsa says:

Oh, I definitely prefer it on the warmer side, too. But, it’s so incredibly wasteful of limited natural resources to keep our condo as toasty warm as I’d like. So, we compromise a little bit. I’m sure we could keep it colder at this time of year (60 is even too cold during the night – brrr), but we try to be conscientious of the environment around us.

  24. Honestly, I don’t like to be cold when I get out of bed, so I usually keep my place at a consistent 70 to 71 degree temperature. I use one sheet and one comforter on my bed, and that’s it.

Of course, I live in NYC so I don’t control my own heat, so my room is FREEZING though the main part of the apartment is warmer. I don’t have a radiator in my room, so the heat has to get into my room from the other rooms. It’s a bit chilly but I’m making due.

  25. Jac says:

Something to consider; even though it may be free for you to heat your apartment to 75 degrees, think of the environmental implications. Every degree you can stand to turn the heat down makes a difference. Perhaps you could tolerate 70 degrees instead?
However, that said, my husband has agree to compromise at 65 degrees at our house during the day and 62 overnight. Yes, I am always heavily dressed and have a blanket on but, for me, it is worth it to be green!

  26. Amy says:

my parent’s house is always freezing as well here in MN… they try to keep it at 68 degrees all day/night, but I swear it does not feel like it. I’m constantly cold as well and thankful my mom keeps a heated blanket on my bed yet!

  27. Addict says:

I am in the exact same situation. I come home for the holidays and cannot stand the freezing weather INDOORS! My dad claims that because I put the AC at 65 in the summer I should be comfortable at 60 with a sweatshirt in the winter… I don’t think so. Hopefully I never pay for heat because I also keep my apartment in the city at 75 :-) best ever.

  28. Andhari says:

No matter how much I love rain and cooler weather, even snow! I prefer being warm when I’m in bed and about to sleep too. Do you have one of those coffee table-slash-heater japanese people use to stay warm? They’re perfect for living room so you don’t have to stay cold all the time when you’re not in bed. You can be warm while watching tv/ have dinner.

  29. Michelle says:

HAHA your dad sounds just like my dad! I’m a little luckier, with the heat on at a “brisk” 65 degrees all the time, but come on–we’re in New Hampshire–it’s like 7 degrees ALL WINTER HERE.

At night time, I literally can’t fall asleep for how cold I am. I sleep with flannel sheets, two flannel blankets, and two quilts. And my hands and toes are still icy all night. My dad and I constantly argue about the thermostat too, and whenever I turn on the electric fireplace he makes fun of me!

    Humbug.

  30. blaez says:

we keep ours between 65 and 70. anything more than that 70 and i get too hot and lower than 65 and he swears i’m freezing him.

we both grew up in the south and are not use to such cold winters as chicago so we have blankets and throws on the couch year round to snuggle in. we rarely use the a/c in the summer but boy does our heater get good use while winter is here!!

  31. Jessica says:

Haha, I can totally relate. I love being warm and most of my house is warm, but for some reason, my room is always ICE COLD. Literally, I’ll walk out of my room and into the hallway and it’s about 10 degrees warmer. No idea why and it really sucks!

  32. Maureen says:

I am sorry if I came off a bit cold (no pun intended). It is just that heating isn’t inexpensive and we have just one income (and it isn’t mine).

  33. Maureen says:

In the Northern Burbs of Chicago here and my husband and I keep our temps about 62 during the day and about 58-60 at night. We have afghans all over and there are always sweaters to put on or hot tea.
I grew up just a few suburbs over and it was a larger place than I live in now. But what I just wrote is what I heard all the time from my parents. My mother even grew up in Dallas and then San Francisco so she wasn’t used to the chicago Winters until she married my father. It is just what we expect this time of year.

  34. mandy says:

We keep our house at 65/66 or so in the and turn the thermostat down to around 58/60 in the evening. Its chilly but we use lots of blankets and we all prefer to sleep in when its colder. It does make it incredibly difficult to get up in the morning though.

  35. stealthnerd says:

Okay, yeah, my parents are the same way. Thankfully this year, we have heated floors in the family room which will hopefully help the heat situation. My last apartment was on the 27th floor and I ran the stupid AC all winter. This year, I finally have an apartment that doesn’t seem to have too many issues on it’s own but I can’t regulate the thermostat. Alllll that said, I’d prefer to be too hot. B/c let’s face it, shorty PJs are way cuter than full body fleece!

  36. lbluca77 says:

My apt is so cold in the winter. I don’t have a heater, which in So Cal is not really needed. I do have a small portable heater I use though that really warms the place up.

But sometimes in the early morning it will be so cold in here I can see my breath. My building is old and I have all wood floors so that does not help me from nearly catching my death it is so cold.
