Weekend recap: Pre-holiday travel prep

By: Jessica B.

Happy Sunday everyone! In less than two weeks it’s Christmas. Yikes. In fact, this time next weekend, I’ll be celebrating Christmas with my dad’s side of the family (early) and will be back in Wisconsin through the holidays. A week at home? I’m already planning lots of me-only field trips :)

But before I go home, I have a ton of stuff to wrap up. It’s amazing how fast time goes before you leave to go home or on a trip. I’m used to going home for a weekend but when I’m gone for more than three days, suddenly it’s a HUGE production to get ready.

The pre-travel prep includes:

  • Hair cut/color
  • Laundry
  • Waxing
  • Packing

Oh and leg shaving. This weekend I got my hair cut/colored and eyebrows done and below is a picture of the new “do.” I tried to be adventurous and cut the bangs a little shorter than normal. Now I am in the difficult adjustment period. Oh well.

Here’s what else was going on this weekend.

Everyday Adventures’ tree

Last weekend I put up my Christmas tree, but due to a miscommunication with dad, the wrong ornaments were brought down to Chicago. So I figured that my Charlie Brown tree would be bare this year, but I de-Scrooged and put some up Friday night and it was a lot of fun. And a great trip down memory lane.

So at Modern Gal’s request, here’s a picture of the final product!

Zoo Lights!

This may be crazy, but I love the little touristy holiday things in the city. This includes the CTA holiday train, Michigan Avenue tree lighting and Zoo Lights. I just soak it up.

And one touristy piece I did for the first time this year was Zoo Lights which takes place every year at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Zoo Lights is pretty much just the Zoo just decorated with lights and holiday figures so it’s cheesy but a lot of fun. As you can see, it’s pretty magical :)

More pictures and a video are up on Flickr too.

Not shown in these pictures: me almost tripping over a stroller placed behind me while I was examining a display. The kids must have smelled fear and come after me!

Bloggy Giveaway Awesomeness

About a month ago, I won Mandy’s book giveaway. I never win bloggy giveaways so I was thrilled to see Random.org gave me a little love (finally).

Anyhow, Mandy said she would fulfill whatever book desire I had and after some thought, I went with a classic: Sense & Sensibility. I’ve never read it but love Ang Lee version of it so I figured, this is this is the perfect opportunity for me to finally crack the book.

BUT when the book arrived, Mandy gave me another surprise along with the book, one that made me actually scream out loud in joy.

It’s cougar time! RAWR!

Thank you Mandy!!!

What about everyone else? Is your tree decorated and holiday cards out the door? Or do you have a pre-holiday travel ritual to get started on?

Putting shopping on notice

By: Jessica B.
Tagged: Fashion, shopping

I love to shop. Window shop, online shop, daydream shop, it doesn’t matter. If I wasn’t working in my current profession, I would totally be a personal shopper. I love it.

This year, many of my winter/summer clothes finally wore out so it was time to update the closet. And although I got many of those new pieces on sale, I still had one too many large Banana Republic bills. Eek!!!

Why did it happen? Well, I’m a sucker for sales and deals. When I get a coupon for $15 off $75 or more, I end up buying $75 of stuff so I can get that savings. Why should it go to waste??

But then, I open up my statement and see that the bill is a little (or a lot higher) than I expected. I never spend outside of my means but I forget those little purchases add up too. And when I can’t even remember some of the charges, I feel faint.

So to avoid another reaction like that, I’ve put my own shopping habits on notice.

That’s right, on notice.

No more shopping.

But I need to make sure I start small so I don’t go totally crazy.

So my new goal is: no shopping for unnecessary purchases until after Christmas (December 29th to be exact).

But I am weak so I know I need to define what is and isn’t acceptable so I can stay on track.

Acceptable:

  • Replacing items I already own (i.e. blush, mascara, bras)
  • Holiday gifts for friends and family
  • Returning items I bought that I know I won’t wear

Unacceptable:

  • Buying new clothes, purses, shoes, jewelry, etc. because I want them (and only for that reason)
  • Buying holiday gifts for myself
  • Returning clothes I bought to buy more stuff

This is going to be tough but I think it’ll be a good challenge (help me be strong!)

Time to occupy my mind with…work or books or working out.

No more excuses, the challenge starts today!

What about you? Are you able to resist deals when you get store coupons in the mail? Or have you started your holiday shopping for this year?

Cheaters

By: Jessica B.

I could say that the Tiger Woods drama didn’t inspire this post but that would be a lie.

And really, this post isn’t about him, but reading online about his “transgressions” and his apologies to his family, it got me thinking about…cheating.

I’ve been cheated on and it sucks but I always find it strangely interesting why guys/girls do it.

I’ve never cheated on someone and although I’ve been tempted, I never did it.

When the Tiger drama started blowing up, a friend and I were gossiping about it and got to the core of our curiosity: why do people do it?

Famous or not, why do people cheat?

Is it the thrill of being caught? Or the overconfidence that you can do it and no one will know about it?

Or is it that after awhile, when relationships change and grow over time, that you get bored and look for excitement elsewhere?

When Peter cheated on me, it was primarily because he wasn’t happy. Yes, I would have preferred he told me that rather than cheat on me but in that case, I found cheating to be a coward’s way out. Rather than face our relationship issues, he gave me a reason to break up with him instead of doing it himself.

And if you’re always looking for something better, why have your boyfriend/girlfriend/fiance or husband/wife be collateral damage?

And sure, I was surprised Tiger cheated (allegedly) but in reality, it’s not just one type of person that does it. Even the good girl or the guy next door can do it. I guess how you move on is really trying to regain that trust.

So I guess there isn’t is a real POINT to this post moreso than to just pose that question out there: why do you think men/women cheat?

Review blog update: Okay so this review really isn’t related, but I’m reviewing MAC’s Tinted Lipgloss on my other blog so check it out! Perfect for holiday parties.

Also, I know I’ve been a total slacker on the review blog but I’m in desperate need of finding new things to review so there may be some delays or silly stuff, but I am working on updating this regularly!!

My love/hate relationship with snow

By: Jessica B.
Tagged: Chicago

Growing up in the Midwest, I’m very familiar with winter…and snow. And let’s just say that after this much time with it, we have a love/hate relationship.

Love: Watching it snow, walking in snow, snowballs, snow angels, catching snowflakes on my tongue.

Hate: Commuting to work in snow, driving in snow, shoveling, sound of the snowblower at 5 a.m.

Yep, it’s a combative relationship.

Anyhow, I woke up this morning, looked outside and gasped. The first snowfall of the season in Chicago was here. And I couldn’t help but put my hands to the glass and just watch it fall.

One of my interns at work has never seen significant snowfall before and I love watching talking to her about it at work because her reaction makes my cynicism soften a little.

There’s something peaceful about watching it snow, that is until the sound of a snowblower wakes me up at 6 a.m. That I don’t enjoy. I do love the little crunch under my feet when I walk in snow with my boots, feeling it mush beneath me.

But the best part about snow is SNOW DAYS! Even if we never got them in school. Seriously, we never closed.

I love holing up in my apartment watching movies and TV and connecting with others only through the internet because it’s too cold and/or snowy to go outside. Add a lit Christmas tree in the background and you’ve got a slice of heaven right there.

And while I love snow now, come January/February, when the magic of the holidays wear off, I’ll be sick of this and pissed off whenever I see it snow, so for now, I’ll just enjoy the excitement about it because I know it won’t last.

First snow!

What about you? Have you gotten snow yet or do you have a love/hate relationship with it?

Pretzel madness: Wow you guys REALLY liked the pretzel from the Christmas market this weekend. Yes, it was insanely delicious and yes, it would only have been made better with melted cheese to dunk it in. Seriously. If you live in Chicago, you MUST go get one. Seriously.

Weekend recap: Getting in the holiday spirit

By: Jessica B.
Tagged: Chicago, Food

Happy Sunday everyone! Right now, I’m battling my first cold in over a year. Yes, I’m not happy about it, but my nasally voice could bring me some freelance business as a phone sex operator. Hey, we’re in a recession :) Anyhow, my parents were in town this weekend and this cold definitely put a damper on things. Screw you cold.

Anyhow, now that it’s officially December, I need to begin getting in the holiday spirit. I love the holidays but right now, I’m living in denial because I can’t believe it’s ACTUALLY here. Eek!

So this weekend I did two things to help me get in the mood: put up the tree and visit the Daley Christmas Market, which has great German food and gifts. My German class used to go to Chicago every year to attend the market and I still love it, especially the food. Hmmm potato pancakes, bratwurst, pretzels and cinnamon almonds. So good.

And even though I couldn’t breathe and was congested, I went out and took some photos and basked in the spiced wine and the best Bavarian soft pretzel I’ve ever had. Seriously, it was carb heaven. Oh and who knew spiced wine could clear your sinuses for 10 minutes?

Photo time!

Gluhwein – warm and great for your sinuses

My other favorite part of this weekend was putting up my tree. My very faux-looking tree. Yes, it’s cheap and Charlie Brown-like but I like it :) And despite an ornament mix-up with my dad, I put a few up. Either way, I love coming home and seeing my tree and having it lit while I watch TV.

Oh and I made my list of holiday cards and gifts to buy. I am ready to lock and load! Next up: Love Actually. That movie always puts me in the holiday mood.

So what about everyone else? Did you put up the tree or start Christmas shopping?
