Weekend recap: New Years, baby whisperer and congestion

By: Jessica B.

Happy Sunday everyone. My vacation officially ends at midnight, but right now, I am ready to scream because I cannot handle being congested any more.

I can’t sleep, talk, breathe or enjoy food because snot is running everywhere and tissues are taking over my apartment. And after a day, laying around really gets old. You can only watch so much TV, Food Network marathons, check Twitter so often and annoy people by text. After awhile, they stop responding.

Yes, after my family drama, I promptly got sick and spent most of my remaining vacation laying down and sounding like a 900-number operator. Not quite what I had in mind. And because I never learn, I worked out while feeling sick and was the recipient of a 100 degree fever. Lucky me!

I’m hoping I get better this week so I can go back to hanging out with my friends and having fun because I’m tired of being sick.

New Years

I love New Years Eve in Chicago, even if it’s always bone-chilling, snot-freezingly cold and the only way you get a cab is by throwing yourself in traffic.

Despite being sick, I rested up to go out because I didn’t want to stay inside on the big night. And to be more comfortable, I went a little more casual this year, repurposing my holiday outfit (non-original, I know).

And the night was a lot of fun with the following random things happening:

  • Screaming swear words at people stealing my cabs (again)
  • Stealing Jell-O shots from a plastic bag on the floor
  • Drinking too many vodka/cranberries (and having to get a cranberry stain out the next day)
  • Realizing I’m much better at striptease dancing when I’m drunk. I knew I had an inner stripper waiting to come out!

Also, I had a cupcake made with Sprite instead of vegetable oil and it was delicious. I have never heard of that.

Baby whisperer

It’s no surprise that I’m unsure about having kids because I think I would be a bad mom, but yesterday, I went to visit my coworker and found out…I may be a baby whisperer! No joke, I got to hold, cuddle, feed and rock this gorgeous newborn and he was putty in my hands. Even his mom said so!

Oh, a friend once told me a baby’s head smells like the freshest thing ever, so I had to get in on that action when I visited the little guy. I promise, he didn’t mind (neither did his mom).

Here’s a picture of me with the baby and the family dogs, who also loved me. Maybe babies are in my future…but I’ll start with a dog :)

How was everyone else’s weekend? Did you do anything fun for New Years? Or are you dreading going back to work tomorrow?

Movie review reminder: My review of Nine is still up on my review blog, my grade: B-

Sounds like it was an amazing weekend! And cupcakes made with Sprite? Aren’t they awesome?

Also, your NYE was WAY more exciting than mine. ;) I may or may not have been in bed by 11…

  2. Ahhh I love the baby pics. Your hair looks so dark and luscious! And obviously you’re rocking the pink uggs :)

  3. nic says:

Happy New Year! I hope you’re feeling better! I too wound up being sick after New Years and know what you mean about how dull it can be after a day of TV. Ugh. It’s still hard to be back at work though. Longest. Day. Ever.

  4. so who were you giving a strip tease to missy?

  5. I hope you get better soon! I hate being sick!

We laid low on New Years Eve. It was so freakin’ cold out that we wimped out and stayed in where it was warm.

  6. Melissa says:

Ah, lucky! I’m the worst with babies. Haha. But your NYE sounds fun, even if you were super sick the whole time. Feel better!

  7. katelin says:

aw yay for the bebe, so so cute.

  8. Kate says:

I was JUST commenting on another blog about the cab situation on NYE! It is ridiculous to the point that I have had MEN steal cabs from me! And then there was the year when I almost had to cut a bitch. ;)

    Hope you feel better soon!

  9. Kyla Roma says:

Oh I hate our bodies sometimes!! I know that crashing when you need to crash is a good thing, but it’s also lame when it’s over your holidays and you can’t enjoy them like you would like to.

Although, from the sounds of stealing jello shots and smelling babies you did okay =)

    Glad you’re feeling better!

  10. Nora says:

I always get sick on holidays/vacations. I think it’s a body let down thing.

The fact that you posted about a baby today is CRAZY because I had a dream last night that you and I were pregnant at the same time and you & your (HOT) husband were having triplets. I don’t know why but we were at some magical beach resort and then we went shopping at Target together and discussed the possibilities of us getting nannies and furthering our careers while our husbands were playing golf.

  11. andhari says:

I loveee vodka cranberry and jello shots.

And hellooo, baby whisperer? I wish I could be more like that. Babies seem to be so afraid of meeee…

  12. the top of a baby’s head and right underneath a baby’s chin are my favorite little spots :)

by the way, your hair color looks great!

  13. Not being able to taste food when you’re sick is the WORST. It makes me want to give up on life.

  14. jenn says:

work has been unbearable today. over the past 13 days – i haven’t even been UP this early (and yes, i know it’s 10am). glad you had a fun new year’s, and cupcakes made with sprite are the best! to make them even more low-cal, you can do diet sprite with vanilla cupcakes, and diet coke with chocolate cupcakes! :)

  15. A Super Girl says:

Babies have a way of making you feel like you could be a legitimate mother. I think they’re put on this earth just to prove to us non-believers that we can, in fact, successfully procreate!

  16. Lil' Woman says:

I love me some babies….except when they’re wailing, then I promptly hand them back to their parents. :)

  17. Maxie says:

    Is that wine blue??

  18. Paula says:

Babies seem to like me too – which i find weird since the idea of having one of my own is terrifying, frankly.

I’m not actually back at work until tomorrow, but my last day off has been ruined by me having to get up early for a delivery THAT STILL HASN’T TURNED UP! Sooo frustrating!

  19. Maki says:

Awe look at that little munchkin – too cute!!!

Since I work at the salon, there is no such thing as long vacay – I only got one day off on New Year’s. But I had blast at the party my boss threw on the Eve – It was well spent with friends and family!

Happy New Year – wishing you a great year filled with love and laughter! :)
    xoxo

  20. Jessica says:

Squeeeeeee I heart babies! :) You look so cute and natural :)

  21. blaez says:

oh! i wanna hold the baby too!!!

    i can’t wait to be a mommy!

super happy you had a fun nye. we did too :)

    work …that’s a dirty word!

  22. Re: babies… Definitely get a dog. I think they’re easier because you can leave them in a crate when you go out. (I hear this is frowned upon with children.)

  23. bianca says:

oh no, feel better! I had a really low key new years – I spent it inside with the boy and the bestie in jeans and a comfy sweater, but I did have a glass of champagne at midnight – I’m a rebel, I know haha.

Hope you had a wonderful vacation – since I started my vacation late, I still have another week in Chicago. Hopefully it’s filled with hot chocolate and shopping!

  24. lbluca77 says:

I like how you have wine in your hand as you hold the baby. I think I would be totally ok being a mom if it meant having a glass of wine in my hand along with my baby.

  25. hahaha, you’re like myself holding a baby with a glass of wine!

uugh, i also don’t want to go back to work tomorrow! i’ve been doing work all night so i’m ready to teach tomorrow.

    feel better!

  26. mandy says:

And I agree, your hair is looking absolutely fabulous!!

  27. mandy says:

I am in denial that my vacation is over, like yourself, I’m not ready at all. Sorry to hear that you have been under the weather, I hope you’re better soon.

Wine makes everything more tolerable, especially kids. =) Though I need a lot of it when dealing with little tykes.

  28. barbetti says:

Dude – 1. I love your hair! Did you color it recently? 2. That baby is adorable. And 3. Coming from a woman who didn’t know if she would ever want kids for the exact same reason as yours: being a mommy isn’t something you know how to “be” until the baby arrives. It’s completely instinctual. You better make some babies at some point, lady!
