Snack time!

I promise that I didn’t plan two food-focused posts this week. It’s so unlike me!

Plus, I thought this was appropriate because lately I’m craving snacks bigtime. And my cravings usually lead me to chocolate or candy. Especially when I’m stressed. I want to resist it, but sometimes I can’t.

I’m worst at snacking when I’m at home or work and I zone out in front of the TV or computer. Suddenly an apple or bag of chips that sits next to me is just gone. Not good.

So I’m trying to be better about feeding my snack cravings with healthier options instead of candy and making sure I have one little plate of snacks rather than an entire bag of treats.

Here are a few of my favorite non-candy snacks:

Sundried Tomato & Basil Wheat Thins with part-skim mozzarella cheese

The flavor of the crackers is so tasty and it’s a great balance with the cheese. My co-worker Mary introduce me to this combo and I love it.

Baked kale

Rebecca’s blog had a recipe for baked kale and I decided to give it a try. It was very tasty! I accidentally overdid it with the olive oil the first time around, but tried again and it turned out perfect!

Kettle corn

No lie, I used to love super buttery, salty popcorn. And sometimes, I’ll still indulge that craving. But kettle corn uses sugar instead of salt. It’s a nice, sweet taste without leaving a buttery film on your fingers.

So those are my recent favorite snacks, each of which are affordable and easy to find at stores.

Are you a snacky person? Or do you have a tendency to indulge in the unhealthy snacks at home? If you have a great recipe or snack you love too, feel free to share it!

I’m a big snack person, and I love all kinds of sweets for it. I don’t necessarily overindulge when it comes to this, though, and I’ve been struggling recently because the boy and I are trying to go without sweets for this month.

I’ll have to try some of these savory snacks because I’m getting grumpy without my sweets…

  2. Ms Lollygagger says:

I also love kettle corn! I put chocolate chips in the bag once it’s done popping! DELISH!!!

  3. Janalee says:

that first picture reminds me of S’mores…mmmmmm..S’mores

  4. A Super Girl says:

I’ve gotten into nuts lately…especially cashews and almonds. The taste is good, and they’re good for you!

Buttery popcorn is my favorite snack ever and I’m sure you know this, and on the close second : caramel popcorn :p

I try to always combine protein and carb in my snacks. Without the protein, the carbs aren’t fulfilling, but add a little bit of protein and the hunger is gone! I love vanilla yogurt plus a small handful of salty pretzels or string cheese plus Annie’s Honey Bunny Grahams. (I guess all my snacks match sweet with salty too!)

  7. Miss Grace says:

My weakness and downfall lies in savory snacks. I can almost always resist sweets.

  8. Daryl Callahan says:

I love kettle corn and they have the 94% fat free. I spray it with spray butter and it is sooooo good!

  9. stealthnerd says:

Mmm, I love snack time! I am generally a salty snacker and I love that cheese/wheat thins idea–it looks so yummy!

  10. MinD says:

Kale? Really? Yuck. And I hate kettle corn.

We differ on snack selections, for sure.

  11. Lindsay says:

I’m a big snacker. Anything with cheese makes me happy, but I’m trying to snack on more veggies and fruits.

  12. Kate says:

I heart snacks! That said, I really only eat them after working hours — I only keep a bag of sourdough pretzels at the office for when I’m starving. I like the parmesan-garlic Triscuits lately, and one of the healthier snacks I make are oven-roasted chickpeas. So crunchy and good! You can search my blog for the recipe if you’re interested.

You know how some people have drawers full of food in their office?

    I am not that person.

I very rarely snack during the day. My worst snack-y time is typically in the 30-40 minutes between arriving home and heading out for a workout (although I don’t eat much or I’ll get queasy at the gym) or after dinner while watching tv. But instead of taking the whole bag with me, I put some in a bowl or on a plate. Sometimes I’m good and don’t go back to the pantry. Other times not so much.

The Wheat Thins and Cheese sounds great. I’m intrigued by kale chips. How long do they last after you make them? I mean, could you make them on Sunday and still eat them later in the week?

  14. I keep reading amazing things about baked kale! I guess I need to give this a try but, I’m gonna be honest, it doesn’t sound good but I’m willing and curious to try it out.

as for my favorite snacks, I love greek yogurt with fresh fruit, kettle popcorn, and anything that involves chips&dip.

  15. jen says:

i’m definitely a snacker. i LOVE cheese on pita chips. i would HIGHLY recommend the sundried tomato and olive oil triscuits. probably not as healthy as wheat thins but simply the best.

  16. Link for the baked kale?

I like taking flavored granola and mixing it with low fat yogurt.

  17. SoMi's Nilsa says:

I’m much better at home about not snacking than I am at work, where there is always an unattended bowl of candy on my way to the kitchen.

  18. Abby says:

I love Laughing Cow cheese wedges in Garlic and Herb flavor with Thin Crisps. So savory and satisfying.

  19. I love the sundried tomato & basil wheat thins! Adding the mozzrella sounds perfect.

  20. Her says:

That sounds SO good! I don’t think I have any healthy snacks–I’m too lazy to go beyond mealtime for food, but sometimes I’ll just make a pb&j for those in between times.

  21. katelin says:

i’m a popcorn girl myself, seriously it is fabulous, yummmm.

  22. Maki says:

Oh don’t you worry about it – I love your mouth watering food posts!!!! xoxo

  23. Stevie says:

I normally choose salty snacks over the sweet ones (but put a bag of oreos in front of me and I’m done for). One of my favorite snacks is tomato slices with a little bit of salt sprinkled over them, and some fresh basil (or dried basil if I don’t have fresh). Sometimes I’ll leave it at that, but most of the time I’ll add some really sharp cheddar, or a good Irish cheddar, like Dubliner. Oh, so tasty!

Loved your movie review, I’ve been meaning to see that one!

  24. lbluca77 says:

I don’t think I have ever had baked kale but it does look good. But the wheat thins with the mozzarella cheese sounds like a must try to me.

  25. God. I’m so hungry right now. And, admittedly, also drunk. Which makes me hate this post. But.. I still love you. So it’s a wash.

  26. jenn says:

love snacks! some of my new favorites are the new pomegranite rice cakes w/extra fiber (SO GOOD) and any of the smartfood popcorn – especially the berry almond one, and also the flavored almonds (wasabi and soy = yum). also a big fan of english muffins with a little bit of peanut butter topped with a banana and a drizzle of honey. filling & nutritious! i also divide food up into single serving portions in zip lock bags right when i get a bag of snacks. i write the weight watchers points right on the bag so if i grab a ziplock bag, i know what i’m dealing with. then i grab individual servings & dont’ eat the entire bag. :)

  27. mandy says:

I love kettle corn! I have always preferred it to salty, buttery popcorn. Also, I eat those crackers but never thought of adding the mozzarella, thats a great combo. I eat carrots a lot too. They are crunchy and filling.

  28. I am such a snacker! I love chips, especially Baked Cheddar and Sour Cream Ruffles. Movie Theatre Butter Microwave Popcorn…pretty much anything salty, buttery and in general bad for you. Any wonder why I have high cholesterol?

  29. I adore popcorn. That’s our snack of choice.

  30. Arielle says:

Ha I was totally going to say kettle corn before I saw you already had it. =) I love snacking and I’m trying to lose weight, so I definitely am always looking out for some non-chocolate type snack foods. Fruit is a big one (frozen grapes, yum). I also love granola bars, honey wheat pretzels from Trader Joe’s, and veggies dipped in fat-free (but somehow still delicious!) creamy peppercorn dressing.
