Learning to be a better boss

By: Jessica B.
Tagged: work

After watching “Kell on Earth” last night, I found myself laughing, cringing and being thankful that I’ve never had a boss like Kelly Cutrone.

In fact, I’ve been pretty lucky in the boss field.

Sure, I haven’t gotten along with all of them, but I can only remember one boss I really, really hated.

I mean, hated to the point of cringing when she would speak to me and watching her smile as she tortured me in the office. Belittling my work, nitpicking to the point of making me cry almost every day because I didn’t end an email the way she liked or I didn’t magically know what she wanted at any given second. When I heard she was leaving, the smile would not leave my face.

I even had another boss who told me that I wouldn’t amount to much so I should look at another field where my expectations of success would be lower.

I’m not saying I’m a massive success now, but part of me dreams of finding that one again, showing her my business card and telling her to suck it.

I would never do it, but it’s a great daydream.

And now that I manage staff, I look back at my past bad boss experiences and learn from them. I try to be a better listener, communicator and manager than some bosses were to me. But let me tell you, this sh*t is HARD.

Yes, I’ll make mistakes and some decisions may not be the most popular, but I know that the more I try to do better than those before me, that  years down the road, my girls (yes, that’s what I call them) will look back at me and say, “she wasn’t half bad.”

Fingers crossed.

Do you have any boss horror stories? Or what have you learned from bad bosses or co-workers from your past (or present?)

Tardy: I loved reading everyone’s responses yesterday to the “tardy for the party” post. I’m so glad to hear I’m not the only one who arrives at places early or has friends who constantly run late. So glad to hear!

Movie review: Just a friendly reminder that the Dear John review is still up and with a three day weekend coming up, I’m off to the theater yet again!

Tardy for the party

Oh god now I have that awful song in my head. Ohhhh ohhhh, don’t be tardy for the party.

No, no must refocus.

What I mean to say is that I am a punctual person.

When I need to be somewhere, I’m usually 5-10 minutes early. My Blackberry is perfect because I can always entertain myself cruising the Web or killing time on Twitter.

I hate the feeling being late and people waiting on me.

This weekend, I was 45 minutes late to brunch thanks to being hungover and oversleeping and it made me scream like a five year old girl when I looked at the clock.

Fortunately, some of my friends always run behind schedule so I know if I get delayed on the bus or anywhere that I have a little cushion when we go out.

I do have one friend though that is always late. At least 15-20 minutes late.

If he says 7 p.m., he actually means 7:20 p.m. What cracks me up is why he’s late. Usually it’s because he’s watching TV, playing video games, talking on the phone or enjoying a drink in his apartment. And he never calls to tell you he’s late either. Once, we were supposed to meet at 7:30 so I showed up at 7:45 and he actually beat me to the restaurant and asked, “Dude, lost your watch? I’ve been waiting.” Yeah he was waiting for two minutes, which still puts him 13 minutes late. And no, he wasn’t kidding.

And I think that’s what bothers me the most is when people don’t call to tell you they’re running late.

In this age of cell phones, Blackberrys, iPhones, email, smoke signals and pigeon carriers, you can always take two seconds to send a note saying, “hey I’m running late.”

Yes, my tardiness this weekend made me think about this.

What about you? Are you usually on time to running late? Do you have a lot of friends that are always late too?

Weekend recap: Getting crazy with friends

Happy Super Bowl Sunday everyone. Right now, I’m not feeling so good…because I went out last night and got a little out of control.

How out of control? Well, I am missing an earring and Cheerios were all over my kitchen floor and counter when I woke up this morning.

But I did come home alone, take my clothes off and remove my contacts and eye makeup. So that’s good.

And I smell like a mixture of sweat, vodka and cranberry juice. Classy.

God I have the worst headache too.

We were out last night to celebrate a friend’s birthday and after some awesome pre-partying (with funfetti cake!) we went to Pete Wentz’s club Angels & Kings.

I was also super nervous about my outfit because I have no ideas what to wear to these places. So I talked to my super trendy friend Lizz and here’s what I came up with:

(Shirt: Banana Republic, Leggings: Hue, Boots: Banana Republic, Sweater: Old Navy, Necklace: Banana Republic)

And there was a lot of dancing, jumping around, drunken tweets and screaming/singing.

It was awesome. I LOVE going out to dance and my striptease moves did not go unused.

I will also be refraining from vodka-based dinners for the near future too.

And before my night out, I had some good eats too back at DMK with some of my Chicago ladies. But instead of the Parmesan truffle fries, I tried the sweet potato ones and they were pretty good. I liked The Counter’s sweet potato fries better but seriously, the Parmesan fries are amazing. I would go back for those ANY DAY.

I’m also addicted to Wii Tennis. Seriously, addicted. I played for an hour Saturday and my arm is KILLING ME. To be this sore from a video game makes me wonder how in shape I actually am!

How was everyone else’s weekend? Did you watch the Super Bowl and the commercials?

The online shopping bait and switch

By: Jessica B.
Tagged: Fashion, shopping

Why I love online shopping:

  • It’s easy to do from home or work
  • You do not have to wait for a fitting room
  • You do not have to deal with unhelpful sales associates
  • More likely to find your size (especially in pants for me)

Yes, I love online shopping for all of these reasons. Plus, I get little presents (that I paid for) delivered to me at work. It’s like Christmas or my birthday but throughout the year!

And sales tax is usually cheaper (especially if you live in Chicago where it’s 10.25 percent.).

Sure, returns are annoying sometimes, but overall, it’s easy.

The only thing that dampers my love of online shopping is the bait and switch.

This means: what looks great online looks awful in person.

Wah wah.

Yes, the trouble of “maroon red” looking more brick red, or “dreamy green” looking more like some odd mix of grass green and puke. Not so dreamy after all.

Or when that lux-looking fabric and dress feels like a bad polyester/nylon blend. Ick.

I don’t have this happen a lot but when it does, it really irritates me. I hate getting all excited about the stuff I purchase, only to find out it looks totally different in person. That does not make my shopping experience easier.

And I’ve found Old Navy and Land’s End are the biggest offenders of this bait and switch. When I complained once, a rep from Land’s End actually told me, “oh yeah, we hear this a lot.”

Really? Well maybe…something should be done about that? If I have to go into the store to make sure that what I buy online looks normal in person, I would just BUY in the store.

Speaking of that, I have a stack of returns for this weekend. Sometimes, I wonder if I should just stick to buy things in black, gray or white online because those colors are tough to really mess up.

Lots of questions to ask! Do you online shop a lot? If so, what do you usually shop for? Or have you had this happen to you when you shop online? Or do you prefer to still go in store to purchase?

Movie review: I’m off to the movies this weekend but you can still check out my review of An Education in the meantime!

Snack time!

By: Jessica B.
Tagged: Food

I promise that I didn’t plan two food-focused posts this week. It’s so unlike me!

Plus, I thought this was appropriate because lately I’m craving snacks bigtime. And my cravings usually lead me to chocolate or candy. Especially when I’m stressed. I want to resist it, but sometimes I can’t.

I’m worst at snacking when I’m at home or work and I zone out in front of the TV or computer. Suddenly an apple or bag of chips that sits next to me is just gone. Not good.

So I’m trying to be better about feeding my snack cravings with healthier options instead of candy and making sure I have one little plate of snacks rather than an entire bag of treats.

Here are a few of my favorite non-candy snacks:

Sundried Tomato & Basil Wheat Thins with part-skim mozzarella cheese

The flavor of the crackers is so tasty and it’s a great balance with the cheese. My co-worker Mary introduce me to this combo and I love it.

Baked kale

Rebecca’s blog had a recipe for baked kale and I decided to give it a try. It was very tasty! I accidentally overdid it with the olive oil the first time around, but tried again and it turned out perfect!

Kettle corn

No lie, I used to love super buttery, salty popcorn. And sometimes, I’ll still indulge that craving. But kettle corn uses sugar instead of salt. It’s a nice, sweet taste without leaving a buttery film on your fingers.

So those are my recent favorite snacks, each of which are affordable and easy to find at stores.

Are you a snacky person? Or do you have a tendency to indulge in the unhealthy snacks at home? If you have a great recipe or snack you love too, feel free to share it!
