When I was a kid, I always had household cleaning chores. Mine centered around dusting and vacuuming, which are the perfect tasks to get a perfectionist anal retentive kid. Seriously, it was like heaven.
But now that I’m an adult and living on my own, cleaning is the bane of my existence. I daydream about getting a Roomba (maybe even a DJ Roomba!) or one day, a cleaning person because I hate doing it that much.
And if I had to pick two rooms that I hate cleaning the most, it would be the bathroom or kitchen. Those are the bastard stepchildren of my apartment. I give them as much attention as I would to a rock stuck in my shoe.
Why should I have to clean those rooms? Shouldn’t they compete for my love and affection by self-cleaning? Maybe? Maybe…not.
After honing my skills as a master vacummer and duster, I hate getting on my hands and knees to scrub the floor or toilet. This is embarrassing to admit, but sometimes, I only know when it’s time to clean the toilet when I’m in between dry heaves after a night of drinking. When you’re waiting for that next wave, you have plenty of time to see the filth in hidden places.
I have to clean both rooms (actually my entire apartment) this weekend and I know I’ll leave them for last because I’ll magically be looking for an excuse not to do it. Like a meteor hitting my building or someone calling and asking if I want to meet up right away or John K showing up at my apartment declaring his love for me and taking me away on his private jet. DREAM!
But as much as I hate doing it, I love the way both rooms look when they are clean. Until the next day when somehow they get dirty again and I look at them and say…FAIL.
What room do you hate cleaning the most in your apartment/house? Or do you just really love cleaning…and want to come over to my house? I pay in baked goods and witty humor.
I like cleaning the bathroom and kitchen. I don’t like dusting, vacuuming, or doing laundry. The latter can go screw.
want to switch? i haaaaate vacuuming and dusting! i’d rather clean the bathroom any day!
Yeah, bathrooms are DEFINITELY the worst, followed by kitchens. Bathrooms because it just grosses me out to clean them, and kitchens because they NEVER STAY CLEAN!!!
Ugh, I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been putting off cleaning my room until tonight. It’s so ridiculous, but for some reason, I hate putting my clothes away. But now that it’s clean, I feel so much better. And it looks good!
See, I really don’t mind cleaning the kitchen, especially doing dishes, I don’t mind that at all. But I hate cleaning my bedroom. Seriously, it’s like pulling teeth, and whenever I do it, I have to allow time because if I feel rushed, I won’t do it. I need to be able to sit around and separate my dirty clothes or at least have some music on while cleaning, otherwise I totally lose interest and avoid it like the plague.
Dusting is my least favorite because I hate, hate, hate taking everything off the shelves and then having to put them back on. And there is always dust, no matter what, like two seconds after I’m done dusting. So annoying. I’ll trade you bathroom cleaning for dusting my place, k? :)
I am such a bad housekeeper. I do not like to clean at all. I just have such a hard time finding TIME to do it. If I have some down time it is usually “Work out, do homework or clean” and the first two HAVE to win. When I do clean I don’t mind it and I really don’t mind scrubbing toilets, I just don’t think to do it as often as I should!
oh man i totally agree, i totally hate cleaning the bathroom, hands down the worst room in the place to clean, ew.
Bathroom, for sure. And like others, I hate folding laundry. I have no problem tossing it in the washer or even the dryer. But folding? Gah. Spare me.
dude – i’m with you. bathroom & kitchen are by FAR the worst. they get so grimy and nasty. when we clean the house – my husband does those rooms & i do everything else.
I effing HATE cleaning and yet I do most of it around my house (although I always make Brian clean the shower). Dusting and washing floors are the worst for me. I’m allergic to dust so I try to reason that by NOT dusting, I’m not aggravating my sinuses. :) And with nearly a whole house full of hardwood floors, there sure are a lot of surfaces to keep clean.
I am forever trying the newest miracle cleaning product for bath/kitchen. If it’s disposable, no-scrub, never-touch-the-gross-stuff, I don’t care if it’s laden with cancer-causing toxins, I WANT IT because it will make cleaning easier.
(BTW, those disposable toilet brush heads that you just flush down without touching them? Are AWESOME.)
I hate cleaning floors. The bathroom tends to be cleaned up in sections. One day the tub gets done, another day the sink and mirrors, and then finally the floor.
Oh, and living in an apartment with five laundry machines is great and I get all my laundry done in about an hour and a half, but then it tends to sit on my floor for a week because I hate putting it away!
Bathrooms and dishes. Hands down. I cringe at cleaning either.
Oooh, I have a Roomba!!! I love it. It really does a good job – it’s amazing!!! I highly recommend it!!!
I despise cleaning all the rooms! Ha!
Gord takes care of the bathroom … yay!
The bathroom is such a pain because there are so many danged surfaces! I especially hate scrubbing the bathtub.
I also hate cleaning the little things like baseboards and the tops of windowsills. So, I don’t. But then I feel all grossed out when I see how much dust and dog hair has collected on them.
I hate cleaning…all of it. Dog hair has taken over my house and it is a loosing battle for me. The guy who says to me “I’ll get you a maid.” I. will. marry. Cleaning sucks because as soon as you do it, it’s time to do it again.
I don’t do dishes. Do not do them. I had to do all the dishes as a kid… and now I do ALL the cooking, so Gene does the dishes. Except for the colander, because he doesn’t know how to clean it.
sigh. oh how I hate cleaning the kitchen. mostly because it’s dirty again after an hour or two. seriously, i am a constant mess, always dropping things, spilling things, breaking things…you get the picture.
lol…this weekend (while dry heaving, thanks to a hangover!)i came to the realization that it was time to scrub the toilet. that just made me want to puke more!!
i’m horrible at folding and putting clothes away. i tear apart my closet getting ready, but never put it back together! let’s not even talk about laundry day!
Growing up, the only cleaning-related chore I ever had was to clean my room. And it’s translated well into adulthood. I DON’T CLEAN. Seriously. I come close to wretching if I have to clean a bathroom. And while I clean as I go when I’m cooking, I generally don’t scrub down counters of the stove. That’s why my bi-weekly cleaning lady is a must. She will not be cut out of the budget no matter what our financial planner tells us.
I love cleaning ONLY sometimes especially if the husband is helping me! I love it when he does it all before I come home from work.
I’m totally with you on the bathroom. When I drank a little too much and was sick at my friend’s house, I remember thinking how clean her toilet was…I obviously am not that clean. And I think I clean the bathroom pretty frequently, but it seems to get dirty again instantaneously.
I hate cleaning the bathroom and kitchen the most too. I feel like I am always cleaning the kitchen. These people always want to eat! The bathroom is really gross too with a 6 year old son. You should try cleaning up toilets after that. Gross!
#1 – bathroom
#2 – kitchen
I hate cleaning the stove. Mine is ALWAYS dirty! I use it every day so as soon as it’s clean it’s time to cook again, and then it’s dirty again. I always spill or splatter. Constant gooey baked on mess! It makes me mad just thinking about it. I need one of those flat tops stoves so I can just wipe it clean each time and be done with it.
Ugh I hate cleaning bathrooms too :( luckily I have someone in the house cleaning them but when she takes days off then that’s when the problem starts for me.
Um, you’re supposed to clean? Interesting b/c I find the kitchen the easiest and everything else just goes by the wayside. HA.
oh this is easy, hands down my bathroom – i’m horrible about cleaning it.
i never had to clean until four years ago when i finally lived out on my own. i was beyond spoiled with cleaning ladies my whole life
Yeah I’m with you on the bathroom thing, so I only do that once a week. I hate cleaning the kitchen. Mostly because it seems like I have to clean something in the kitchen at least once a day, and I don’t even know why. Like, how can making one meal a day get the kitchen THAT gross?
The kitchen I can‘t stand to clean. Mostly because I don’t have a dishwasher so I can’t stand having to do the dishes. I am so bad sometimes, I will wash maybe half of them then stop. I even think at times of just throwing out all my dirty dishes and buying new ones just so I don’t have to wash them.
I do use plastic plates, cups and silverware sometimes (I know, so bad for the environment) But for the sake of my sanity I use the plastic stuff. But even when I use plastic stuff there is still dishes to wash. It is never ending. The only solution is to stop eating I guess.
We could trade off! I’m completely OCD about the way my kitchen & bathroom are cleaned. The floors & dusting interfere with my will to live some days. And I can’t even talk about laundry. I just can’t.
When I was a kid, my chores were vacuuming and dusting – both of which I hated then.
Now I don’t mind vacuuming but I still hate dusting.
Thankfully, my dad is the resident housekeeper so he does the rest of chores and any home maintenance. reason #1066525061 why I’ll never be able to leave home.
I often wonder what happened to me – I liked cleaning as a kid, and now I HATE it. All of it.
I had the same household chores as you when I was a kid. These days I dont mind dusting or cleaning the kitchen. Running the sweeper and cleaning the bathroom I completely loathe. Scrubbing the toilet or the shower is just not my thing.
I’m with Amy – I hate folding laundry.
I loveee cleaning the bathroom; I freaking HATE LAUNDRY. Hate it.
It’s the bathroom for me too…but I am a bit anal (ew, right) about making sure it meets my stringent hygienic standards. Bleach gives me a headache, so I try to do it all as fast as possible!
