Within the last three days, I got two big reality checks. It started when the weather became gorgeous this weekend.
Chicago had its first taste of spring weather, which meant I was out getting fresh air and checking out the stores for cute new spring clothes.
Enter reality check number one. Old Navy was having a big sale on skirts and dresses, both of which are my spring wardrobe staples so I was ready to stock up.
But after a long winter, trying on spring clothes shopping can be a…harsh wake up call.
And the reality check I was written said: get back in shape.
Sure, you can say Old Navy’s clothes are cheap and that styles fit differently, but seeing my fat a** in a piece of jersey was a self-esteem deflator.
So I only bought one of the dresses that fit but was slightly snug and am now using it as my inspiration to get back in a routine at the gym.
This brought me to reality check number two.
I used to go to a bootcamp class regularly at the gym but lately haven’t been able to because of a busy work schedule. But hey, I still go to the gym regularly, it’s a piece of cake!
WRONG. FAIL.
I was down on the ground and I couldn’t get up.
The level of pain I felt was insane. As I laid on the ground, legs and arms aching, I thought, “please God take me now.”
And to add to the misery, there was a “woo” girl in the class, screaming “WOOO I LOVE IT!” Seriously, I wanted to punch her in the face.
But hey, I made it and (hopefully) it’ll get easier again with time. And that dress is going to be good motivation.
Has it started to be spring by you? What are you looking forward to this spring?
Review blog update: It’s not a “formal” review but I took part in an Oscar pool, check out how I did :)
It’s gorgeous out today, but the weather here is really unpredictable. In fact, March is usually our snowiest month, so I don’t want to get too used to it. But I can’t wait for Spring to officially be here. I’m ready for some sun and warm weather!
LOL that girl needs to be smacked!
I think everyone is feeling the same way.. I know I am and it’s like Summer year round long here in Arizona.
so funny, I had a really similar Chicago springtime reality check! Somehow months ago I decided it was a good plan to sign up for the Shamrock Shuffle (5 mile race on March 21). Last weekend my husband reminded me it was in 2 weeks.. I had not realized it was so soon, and totally slacked on running over the winter. But like you, I’ve been going to the gym regularly for yoga and spinning classes, and doing Jillian Michaels DVDs at home – so I figured I’d still be in decent shape for running. Since Saturday was so warm I ventured out for a real run ~ and it was pretty pathetic. Tried again today and it was a bit better.. hopefully I’ll get back to decent condition to get through 5 miles in 10 days!
Haven’t attempted clothes shopping yet, but I know I’ve accumulated my standard winter layer… at least we still have several months before the real beach weather is here!
i could never bring myself to do a bootcamp, despite all the ones i look up online for more info! :P it’s almost spring here, a little rainier than usual though.
Oh man, I can’t stand the “WOO!!” girls. I am always the one in the back row suffering in pain and mentally shooting arrows at the fitness maniacs in the front row.
HA! “I wanted to punch her in the face.” Love it! I took a spinning class once- ONCE and never again- and felt the same way. I was all, “what do you mean we have to pretend we’re riding up an incline? Can’t we just ride normal? What the hell? My face is red and about to explode and just…no.”
Really, anytime someone at the gym has extra energy, I just want to smack them.
Spring means it’s official outdoor running season for me. And what better way to celebrate than to train for the Soldier Field 10-Mile race in late May. Cannot wait!
I would want to punch that girl in the face, too, because, like you, I would be lying on the ground wishing for death. Really. I need to get in shape immediately because I have felt so gross this winter and I refuse to feel gross (or worse, look gross) at my wedding…
You are hardcore in going to a bootcamp class. I would so not be “WOOing”, either.
But I admit I “WOO” in Hi/Lo. I just can’t help it.
An Old Navy commercial was just on … cute summer dresses :)
Things are warming up down here in Indy. Rain later this week. And maybe a thunderstorm! My favourite.
What’s really bad is when your WINTER clothes stop fitting right. That’s where I’m at.
We’ve had weather in the upper 60s and low 70s, and it’s been awesome. Except it’s going to be rainy and in the 50s tomorrow. I am just ready for more daylight, sunny days, flowers blooming, and days spent outside is some form or another. I love the warm weather.
Ugh, and I know what you mean about the spring clothes not being flattering…I need to get on fixing that, ASAP!
if there was a woo girl working out with me i would probably slap her, that is just unacceptable at the gym.
I need to get fit for Spring. I’m a little mushy around the edges. Especially since I moved back to the States. Where are all the healthy places….
Oh god, I’m in the same boat as you. We’ve had insanely spring like weather since January. It’s been in the 60s here and there the past couple weeks (although yesterday the temperature dropped and it started snowing. WTF?) I looked at some of my spring skirts and dresses knowing full well they are going to be way too snug. I’ve been SO bad about working out, but I’m doing a half marathon in June and have been running here and there, and I’m starting the official training program in a few weeks. So that’ll hopefully get me in shape for all those darling spring clothes.
Woo girls make me want to shoot myself.
I am normally a “Woooo” girl in every aspect of my life, except gym classes.
Then I become the girl that wants to stab “Wooo” girls in the face.
I think I may have some issues.
God, I hate woo girls!
Really? There are people who scream “WOO, I LOVE IT” in a gym class? I thought they’d all been dragged off and shot by now … as they should be.
Who in the world “Wooos!” at a cardio class? Even if I like it I’m not the girl all crazy and jumping around with joy. Some people!
We had spring like temps this last weekend so much so that I tried to wear flip-flops but it was still not quite the time for that. I did, however, wear a short sleeved short without a jacket, a feat I’m sure you can appreciate :)
I’m also cranking it up a few notches at the gym/in my routine so that I’m ready to go for spring as well. I”m just so excited for WARM WEATHER!
I HATE the woo! girls in exercise classes. There were about two in my harrowing experience of a spin class and I tried to focus my hate onto them and not on the bike.
lol! Punching the “WOO!” girls sounds like awesome cardio to me ;)
Well, we still had snow here two days ago, but at least today the sun is out. I haven’t gone spring shopping left, but I still have some cute things left from last year. About getting in shape, I’ve noticed playing tennis on the Wii has actually helped me tone my waist and arms! I hadn’t expected that, but it’s nice to have such a work out and not have to go outside in the snow for it.
I think its entirely appropriate to know out the Wooo girl with a well time boxing move. After you do it, I think you should yell “woooo damn that felt good.” =)
dude – i’m in the same wake up call stage. i was in vegas this weekend and it wasn’t pretty. :)
also, i HATE the “woo” or “woot woot” girls in the gym. makes me want to punch them! :)
My friends just opened a boutique and want me to come shopping. I can’t because I need to get this flabby ass back into shape.
There’s nothing like a jersey knit dress to knock you right back into reality.
There is a girl in your class who shouts ‘Woo, I love it’??? I think I would hurt her….
LOL so did you punch the woo girl? :D
It’s still raining so bad here, but sunshine appears more often though. I don’t really know what classifies as spring in the tropic. But I can’t wait to wear a floral dress :)
