Weekend recap: Could Nola be the new Vegas?

Okay, New Orleans isn’t exactly like Vegas but after spending four days there, I still FEEL like I came back from Vegas. Goodness, I am TIRED.

I have to give credit to Katelin because she made the connection.

Yes, I got to go back to the lovely New Orleans for a conference late last week and this weekend and it was amazing. New Orleans is quickly becoming one of my favorite places and will always have a special spot in my heart because it was the first solo vacation I took almost a year ago.

It’s funny that I was there almost a year ago and that trip helped me get to where I am now, which is going to Italy this week. Holy cow.

Anyhow, yes, I love New Orleans and its major selling point (separate from Abita and beignets) is that it is warm without being too miserable right now. We’re in the 40s and rainy in Chicago (hate)  but we had amazing weather in New Orleans, 70s and sunny with only one day of humidity. It’s true that weather can really affect your mood because I was happy as a clam there!

And the benefit about going back this time is that I could go back and see specific things I wanted because I already canvased the French Quarter last year. It’s amazing how much you remember when you start walking around.

Plus, there was lots of good food to be had as well, including:

Beignets – I’m not ashamed to say I went to Cafe du Monde EVERY DAY (and twice on Saturday)

Soft shell crab po boy – There are no words

BBQ lobster – yes please

Homemade ham and cheese soft pretzel. I wanted to slather this all over my body

Yes, the food in New Orleans is beyond tasty but it was also great to hang out with bloggy friends too, including Katelin, who I never get to see enough.

Okay so maybe Nola isn’t exactly like Vegas (even though there were some crazy outfits and lack of pants wearing), but between the walking and late nights/early mornings, my body sure feels like it was.

Clearly, I need to visit Nola more often, and stretch before walking all day. But I did get to bust out the flip flops so I’m still happy!

How was your weekend?

Movie Review: Fulfilling my Victorian movie love with Jane Eyre. Take me to the moor.

And…please tell Italy hello for me? And that I’ll be back soon (hopefully). You’re going to have an amazing time.

It is a damn tragedy that I have never had a beignet! They look fantastic!

So glad you had a great time in New Orleans. My parents are going in June, so I’ll have to get some recommendations from you to share with them.

And I so get what you mean about how it will always have a special spot in your heart because it was your first solo trip…that’s kinda how I feel about the DR. It’s my “happy” place. :)

I can’t believe you go to Italy this week already! I wish we could get together before you go, but I know you’re going to be incredibly busy beforehand.

  9. A Super Girl says:

You’re going to Italy in a week. Holy cow! Now those are some photos I can’t wait to see, even though the beignets do look mighty tasty.

  10. I was not a NOLA fan upon my visit. But it was also late June, very warm and the city just plain smelled. Perhaps I should give it another go. If for no other reason that to try that pretzel/hot ham and cheese combo!

  11. My weekend definitely did not have enough beignets in it! Sounds like a tasty time :)

  12. NEXT time, you’ve got to head to Central Grocery and try a muffaletta. They. Are. Amazing.

  13. you went to cafe du monde every day while you were there? ISN’T THAT WHAT YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO DO?! (or at the very least, what I would do when I finally make my way to NOLA)

  14. Lil' Woman says:

Holy moses…..my stomach is doing flips for food….gimmee it!!!!

  15. Akirah says:

My weekend was decent. Can’t complain, esp after the week I had. I haven’t been to NOLA since I was a kid. I wonder if I’d like it there…I don’t eat much seafood. Anyhow, glad you enjoyed it, even though you’re recuperating.

  16. holy crap, the food!

this is my boyfriend’s favorite city in the world and i hate that i’ve never been there – your post is making me want to go like NOW.

sidenote, a couple weeks ago i bought some cafe du monde beignet mix from world market and made them at home. they were surprisingly easy and delicious!

  17. Jen says:

I am SO hungry now. Want to go back to Nola! Mmm.

  18. Stevie says:

So funny, I was in Vegas this past weekend and my mum (who was in Vegas for the first time)kept saying “Vegas is like New Orleans without the humidity!” And oh man, did we enjoy ourselves. It was between 85 and 90 each day, and totally sunny. Seattle is also experiencing rain and 40 degree weather, so lounging by the pool wearing next to nothing was AWESOME.

Sounds like you had a fabulous trip! I’ve never been to New Orleans but it’s definitely on my list. I’m so excited for you to go to Italy!!!

  19. allison says:

    i’m dying over the pretzel.
