Continuing my music education

I’ll admit that I’m not the most musically diverse. I tend to keep it simple, Top 40, latest hits and classic rock. I rarely deviate outside of them and that’s, okay.

But lately, I’ve taken on a type of “music education.”

And it’s not exactly like music class in high school.

A friend of mine, who loves music and has an impressive online music collection, has generously started helping open my musical horizons. She’s shared music and even invited me to a few local shows she has tickets for.

The first concert I went to with her introduced me to one of my favorite new bands. And now, I’m more than open to hear new music and break out of my comfort zone.

Don’t get me wrong, I still have One Direction, Rihanna and Flo Rida on my iPod but lately I’ve been loving a few new songs too.

So below is a list of some of the new bands/artists I’ve discovered during my musical education. I’m a tad behind :)

┬áIf you have bands or artists that you’re loving and that I should check out, let me know!

What are you listening to right now that you love?

  1. I’ve been slightly obsessed with country music and, naturally, I blame it on living in the south. I’ve been listening to Little Big Town, Pistol Annies, and Miranda Lambert like they will never have any other new music come out.

  2. Marjolein says:

They are all brilliant! I saw Alabama Shakes at a festival last summer – I had no idea who they were, but I’m a fan now!

    Other groups/singers you might like:
Agnes Obel, Florence + the Machine, Little Boots (if you like Calvin Harris, you’ll probably like this too), and I’m not sure if you like rock music that much, but dEUS (a Belgian band) is one of my personal favourites (best song imo: the architect).

  3. Arielle says:

I can’t get into the Alabama Shakes for some reason. My newest music obsession though is Santigold – she’s so fun and her stuff is seriously amazing.

  4. Jill says:

I’m listening to Alabama Shakes now, thanks to your blog post! One of my favourite Canadian bands is City and Colour. So good. Give them a try if you haven’t before!

  5. If you like classic rock/southern rock check out Blackberry Smoke. Especially their track “Everybody Knows She’s Mine.” I love it. Also check out Griffin House “The Guy That Says Goodbye to You.” Totally a love from college but O.A.R. Can’t beat “Crazy Game of Poker” and love “Heaven.” Outside of that I am pretty much a top 40/country girl.

  6. Do you use Spotify? If so I can send you a list of songs from the past few years that I put together for the Modern Love Machine. Were it not for many bloggers who like to share their favorite new music, my music tastes would probably still be stuck in the late ’90s :)
